Domestic violence touches every one of us. It fills emergency rooms and morgues. It keeps employees from being able to work. It makes children fearful, and interferes with their ability to learn. It contributes to crime on our streets. It destroys homes and families. During October, National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Columbia Greene Domestic Violence will be planning some creative, educational as well as inspirational events intending to raise awareness about the prevalence and cost of domestic violence, the need for prevention, and the availability of services for victims.
The following list includes just some of
the many Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities planned for this fall.
October 19th and 26th: A Traveling Bulletin Board with information on domestic
violence will be on display at various business locations throughout the month,
including Columbia County Probation Office, Columbia County Mental Health,
Columbia Memorial Hospital, and the Hudson City Library.
October 20th: The Yellow Dress Play, a dramatic one women play based on the
stories of young women who were victims of dating violence will be hosted at the
Cairo Durham High School.
October 21st: In Her Shoes will be offered to local community members at the
Spotted Dog Cafe. In Her Shoes is a new revolutionary interactive community
education tool, which has participants move, do, think and experience the lives
of battered women as they take part in this hands on activity.
October 27th, 28th, 29th: A Volunteer Training will be offered to local
community members, seeking those interested in volunteering their time to help
out at our local domestic violence program.
Other events such as a fund raiser at the Mexican Radio Restaurant, a Girl Scout
patch program, a tree designed for the Catskill Fortnightly Club’s Festival of
Trees are currently in the planning process.
Domestic violence is everyone’s business, and each one of us has a role to play
in stopping domestic violence. Actions can be as simple as contributing money or
clothing to a local shelter, volunteering, talking to a child about relationship
violence, offering support to a victim of violence, or posting awareness
materials in public places. Although October gives Columbia Greene Domestic
Violence an extra opportunity regarding outreach and awareness activities, it
important to remember that domestic violence is unacceptable – in our community
and in every community, not only this month but every month. During 2008
Columbia Greene Domestic Violence provided shelter services to 219 women and
children who were victims of domestic violence, non-residential services to 284
survivors and responded to 980 hotline calls as well as prepared and had granted
182 order of protections. If you are or know of someone being abused please call
943-9211; all services are free and confidential. For further information on
services provided by Columbia Greene Domestic Violence, or any of the other
programs offered by Community Action of Greene County, Inc., please call
943-9205.
